In this project you will:
Learn about different types of metals used to manufacture products
Design and make a identity tag for a specific purpose
Learn how to finisg aluminium to a good standard
Learn how to cut and shape metal using the correct tools
A few questions to think about: (Discuss these in class to see how much you already know)
Where do metals come from?
Are all metals the same?
How do they differ?
What are they used for? Identify objects within the room that you are in.
Why is 20p not worth 50p in metal value?

There are two main types of metal alloys: ferrous and non-ferrous. Ferrous metals contain iron. Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron. Both types of metals can be recycled.
Non-ferrous metalsAluminium alloys: lighter than steel, but more expensive and not as strong.
Non-ferrous metalsMost of the common non-ferrous metals have good corrosion resistance. These include:

Non-ferrous metalsMost of the common non-ferrous metals have good corrosion resistance. These include:
- Aluminium alloys: lighter than steel, but more expensive and not as strong.
- Copper: one of the best electrical conductors. This is commonly used to make electrical wires.
Ferrous metalsThe most common type of ferrous metal is low-carbon steel. This contains up to 0.3 percent carbon. It is stronger than most non-ferrous metals, woods and plastics. Compared to other metals, it is easy to machine, tough and cheap. However, it is prone to corrosion and rusting.
The metal we will be using is aluminium
Watch the video to help you understand this better:
Brief:
Design and make a identity tag, for a special purpose using the metal provided. The product must be finished to a high standard.

Analysis:
Write down four types of identity tags that you can make and specify what the target market for each tag will be.

Specification:
Write down at least eight things that your tag must, could or should look like . (use Access Fm as a guide)

Designing Initial Ideas
a) Using your specification, draw four ideas of what your identity tag could look like. Annotate each idea carefully. (Do on the blank page)
b) Now write down, by asking the opinion of a friend/s which tag is the best and why. Write down tree things that you could improve on looking at the design of the tag.
